There are over 5 million undocumented immigrants living in America right
now. President Obama just called for action on the current immigration
laws, saying the system was "broken," and is seeking to overhaul
much of it. In response to that, two new programs were created, the Deferred
Action for Childhood Arrivals and the Deferred Action for Parental Accountability.
The President believes that current immigration laws do little to help
the nation's situation. The new reforms seek to keep the law-abiding
people in, and keep the criminals out. This can be a difficult area for
some who are unsure of their own legal status. That is why our firm is
here to help. The Stornello Law Firm, P.C. hopes that our
efforts can efficiently guide those who wish to immigrate to America lawfully.
New Immigration Programs
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, and Deferred Action for
Parental Accountability (DAPA) are the two main programs that were unveiled
during the president's call to reform. If, for example, a parent of
a U.S. citizen of permanent resident is facing deportation, then the program
can extend some time for the parent to stay in the U.S. and be authorized
to work. For children, the DACA program can also assist with those facing
removal proceedings.
These are the current eligibility requirements:
- Arrived in the U.S. before the age of 16
- Below the age of 31 as of June 15, 2012
- Have resided in the U.S. since June 15, 2007
- Physically present in the U.S. on June 15, 2012 and also at the time of
requesting DACA
- Did not have a lawful status on June 15, 2012
- Have had no serious misdemeanor convictions or felonies
